One of the first and most obvious symptoms of a broken transfer case is lack of 4x4 engagement or electronic 4x4 light. The transfer case is found in all vehicles that have four-wheel drive as well as front-wheel drive. It receives power from the transmission and then sends it to the front and rear axles.
The most common sign that a transfer case needs replacement is when the vehicle shifts in and out of front wheel drive and all wheel drive. However, difficulty shifting gears and hearing grinding noises when you shift gears are also common symptoms of a run down transfer case. While a faulty transfer case may seem like more of a nuisance than an actual problem, it can cause major problems with the vehicle's driving mobility. A faulty transfer case makes the vehicle unsafe to drive because of the inability to predict when it will shift in and out of all-wheel drive or lock up.
